Elena Martinez, PhD, MPH

Dr. Elena Martinez is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. She holds the Sam M. Walton Endowed Chair for Cancer Research and is Associate Director of the Population Sciences, Disparities, and Community Engagement at the Moores Cancer Center. She has experience leading and coordinating national and international research projects. Her current work focuses on addressing disparities throughout the cancer continuum.

Sheila Castañeda, PhD

Principal Investigator

Dr. Castañeda is a Core Investigator at the South Bay Latino Research Center and Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Department of Psychology at San Diego State University and member of the Population Science Research Program at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. She has 20 years of research experience working in partnership with community-based organizations in difference regions of the United States. She has served as principal or co-investigator for 20 grant-funded studies and she has over 70 peer reviewed publications. She has substantial experience in community-based participatory research (CBPR), mixed-methods, and behavioral science related to cancer and chronic disease disparities.

Samir Gupta, MD, MSCS

Principal Investigator

Dr. Gupta is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California San Diego, and Chief, Section of Gastroenterology at the Department of Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System. His research focuses on the screening and prevention of colorectal cancer. He serves as chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s annually issued Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Colorectal guidelines, and as a member of the US Multisociety Task Force on Colorectal Cancer.
